Australian pathology volume is decided in general practice
The requesting doctor is the customer you rarely speak to
A patient chooses a collection centre for convenience, but the episode itself usually originates with a requesting doctor. That makes general practices, specialist rooms and allied clinics the accounts that actually drive volume — and they are the accounts most labs know least about. Ask a lab manager which ten practices sent the most episodes last quarter and the answer is often confident and slightly wrong.
A referral pattern is a trend, not a total
The number worth watching is not how many requests a practice sent, but whether that number is moving. A practice that sent forty episodes a week for two years and now sends twenty-eight has not complained, has not left, and has not told you anything. It has simply started splitting its work. When each episode carries the requesting practice, that drift shows up as a line on a chart rather than as an annual surprise.
