The referral that arrived and was never booked
Where urology volume actually comes from
Most new patients reach a US urology group through someone else: a primary care physician worried about a PSA result, an emergency department that saw a kidney stone overnight, an urgent care clinic, or a gynecologist referring for pelvic floor concerns. Each of those referrals arrives through a different channel — a fax, an e-referral, a phone call from a front desk — and each one depends on somebody at your practice turning it into an appointment.
Why the gap stays invisible
A referral that was received but never scheduled does not appear in your schedule, your billing or your EHR reports. It simply never happened. The patient may have gone elsewhere, given up, or still be waiting for a call. Giving every referral its own record with an owner and a target date is a small change, and it is usually the first time a practice can say how many referrals it actually converts.
