Two channels, two different jobs
The unhelpful version of this comparison lists features side by side and declares a winner. The useful version starts from what each channel is for. SMS is a notification pipe: universally available, no application required, read within minutes, and culturally understood as one way. WhatsApp is a conversation surface: rich, threaded, comfortable for back and forth, and expected to be answered by a person. The moment you accept that, the question changes from which is better to which job am I doing right now.
Where SMS still wins
Reach is the first reason. SMS works on every handset, including the feature phone your field customer is using, and it does not depend on data connectivity. The second is reliability of a certain kind: for a one time code, an appointment reminder or a delivery alert, you want a message that arrives, is glanced at and requires nothing further. The third is that it does not carry an expectation of conversation, which is a feature when you have nothing more to say.
Where WhatsApp wins
Anything that needs a reply, a document, a photograph or a voice note. Quotation follow-ups, site photographs, product images, a shared PDF, an exchange that runs over several days with pauses in between. It also preserves context in a way that SMS threads do not, which matters when the same customer comes back three months later and the earlier conversation is sitting right there.
