Contract engineering runs on a programme calendar
Michigan carries a staffing niche that barely exists elsewhere at the same scale: placing contract engineers onto vehicle and, increasingly, battery and electrification programmes. The demand does not follow a headcount plan. It follows programme phases, which ramp, consume people for a stretch, and then release them in a group when a phase closes.
Agencies that record the programme, the phase and the expected release points can see a roll-off coming months ahead and start placing people before it happens. Agencies that do not receive a list of end dates from the client and lose most of those engineers to competitors within a month, along with everything they had learned about the client.
The roll-off is the real commercial event
Winning an engineering account is satisfying and comparatively rare. Keeping the engineers when a phase ends is what determines whether the account was profitable, because the recruiting cost was already paid and the replacement cost is paid again from scratch. Redeployment planning is not an afterthought here, it is the business model.
