What a kickoff is for
Two things. First, that everyone leaves believing the same plan and understanding the arithmetic behind it. Second, that people get deliberate practice on the conversations they find hardest, which almost never happens during a normal week. Anything on the agenda that does not serve one of those has to justify itself against the selling time it consumes.
Large company kickoffs contain a great deal of communication that small teams already have continuously. Copying that format is the most common mistake, and it produces a day of presentations to people who already knew most of it.
