How the Jodhpur handicraft trade actually sells
A cluster that ships rather than retails
Jodhpur exports. Wooden furniture, reclaimed and industrial styles, iron and metal work, stone, textiles and decorative goods are made in the workshops and units in and around the city and around Boranada and the Basni industrial belt, and the overwhelming majority of it leaves in containers to buyers in Europe, North America, Australia and the Gulf. There is a domestic trade too, largely to hotels, restaurants and interior projects, but the rhythm of the business is set by export orders.
The buyer you will probably never meet in the workshop
Buyers are importers, wholesalers, retail chains, online furniture sellers and interior buyers, and they mostly evaluate you from another continent. They come through four routes: international trade fairs and the domestic sourcing shows, sourcing agents and buying offices, referrals from other exporters or from buyers who have moved on, and direct enquiries that arrive by email after finding you online. Almost nobody walks in. Everything therefore depends on written communication, photographs and samples.
