What each system actually does
A CRM is where the relationship is worked
A CRM holds the people and companies you deal with, the opportunities you are pursuing, and the interactions your team creates: calls made, messages sent, quotes issued, meetings held. Most of its data is generated inside it by human activity, and its purpose is to make the next action obvious and to record what happened.
A CDP is where data is unified
A customer data platform mostly ingests. It takes events and records from websites, apps, advertising platforms, transaction systems and support tools, resolves them to a single identity, and produces a profile richer than any one source could. It then pushes segments out to the tools that act on them. It is a supply layer rather than a place people work.
