What American startup teams mean when they search for this
The search almost always comes from a company whose product travelled further than its go-to-market did. Sign-ups arrive from Brazil, India, Nigeria, Indonesia and the Gulf, support response rates outside the United States are visibly worse than inside it, and someone eventually discovers that a founder has been running real customer relationships from a personal messaging account with no record the company can see.
Be honest about the domestic case
For your American users this is usually the wrong investment. Email and phone carry the work, text handles confirmations, and adding a messaging channel your domestic customers do not use creates fragmentation without gain. The argument for it is entirely about the users who are not in the United States, and framing it that way keeps the project scoped and the business case defensible.
