Quick answer

What is the full form of TAT?

The full form of TAT is Turn Around Time: the total time between a piece of work starting and being completed and handed back. In sales it usually measures enquiry to first response; in support, ticket to resolution; in banking, application to sanction. The number only means something once the start event, the stop event and the treatment of non-working hours are written down.
  • In business use: Turn Around Time
  • TAT is what happened; an SLA is what was promised
  • In medicine, TAT can also mean a laboratory test's turnaround

01

TAT full form and meaning

TAT stands for Turn Around Time, also written turnaround time. It is the time taken from the moment a request, order, application or case begins to the moment it is finished and returned. If a customer submits an enquiry at ten in the morning and receives a quotation at four in the afternoon, the TAT for that quotation is six hours.

The idea is simple; the counting is where teams disagree. A TAT figure means nothing until three things are agreed: what event starts the clock, what event stops it, and whether the clock keeps running at night, on Sunday, or while the request is waiting on the customer. Two teams with the same work and different definitions will report very different numbers, and both will be honest.

02

How TAT is calculated

The arithmetic is stop time minus start time. The decisions around it are what matter. Start: when the customer submitted, or when your team first saw it? Stop: at the first reply, or when the matter is fully closed? Working hours: does an enquiry that arrives at eleven at night accumulate TAT overnight? Pauses: does the clock stop while you wait for a document from the customer? Write the answers down once and put them on the report itself, so nobody has to reconstruct them later.

One more thing to decide: which number you report. An average TAT is easy to quote and easy to hide behind, because a few very slow cases barely move it. The more useful report is the share of cases finished inside the promise, together with a look at the slowest ones, because those are the customers who remember.

TAT in sales, and why it decides deals

In sales, TAT is usually measured from the arrival of an enquiry to the first genuine response, and again from enquiry to quotation. It matters more than most sales metrics for a structural reason: a buyer who fills in a form has usually filled in several. The supplier who replies first is the one who frames the requirement, and everybody after that is answering someone else's questions. Improving response TAT costs nothing in product or price and changes who the conversation belongs to. See lead response time benchmarks and the lead leakage audit.

05

TAT, SLA, response time, resolution time

These terms overlap and get swapped in conversation. They are not the same thing.

TermWhat it measuresExample
TATTotal time from start to completionEnquiry to quotation sent
SLAThe promised limit, often contractualQuotation within one working day
First response timeTime until the first human replyEnquiry to first call or message
Resolution timeTime until the issue is fully closedComplaint to confirmed fix
Cycle timeTime spent actively working on itTAT minus the waiting and the queue
06

How to reduce TAT

Five changes account for most of the improvement teams actually achieve. Assign work automatically the moment it arrives, so nothing waits in a shared inbox for somebody to claim it. Remove handoffs that exist only to inform someone, since each one adds a queue. Prepare templates for the replies that recur, so the first response is fast even when the full answer is not ready. Alert the owner before the promise expires rather than reporting the breach afterwards. And investigate the slowest cases rather than the average, because the step causing them is usually one specific approval or one specific missing piece of information. More on the last point: lead routing rules and follow-up cadence templates.

07

TAT full form in other fields

In pathology and diagnostics, TAT is the turnaround time of a laboratory test, counted from sample collection to report release. In aviation and shipping it is the time a vehicle, aircraft or vessel spends between arriving and being ready to leave again. In medicine the same three letters are also an unrelated abbreviation in specialist contexts. In an office or a business process, TAT means Turn Around Time.

08

09

Measuring TAT without a stopwatch

TAT is hard to improve when it is reconstructed at month end from memory and spreadsheets. It becomes manageable when the record itself carries the times: when the enquiry arrived, when it was assigned, when the first call went out, when the quotation was sent. A CRM stamps those moments as the work happens, routes new enquiries to an owner automatically, reminds that owner before the promise runs out, and then reports response time by source and by person. Start with lead routing, see follow-up sequences and reporting, or check India pricing. Related: MIS full form and KPI full form.

Challenges we solve

Four reasons a TAT number misleads

Most arguments about turnaround time are really arguments about how it was counted.

  • Problem: Nobody agrees when the clock starts, so the reported TAT and the customer's experience are different numbers.

How HelloGrowthCRM solves it: Write down the start event, the stop event and whether the clock runs outside working hours. Half of all TAT disputes are definition disputes.

    HelloGrowthCRM capability: One agreed definition

  • Problem: The average TAT looks acceptable while a tail of cases waits for days.

How HelloGrowthCRM solves it: Report the spread, not just the average: how many were answered within the promise and what the slowest cases looked like. Averages hide exactly the cases that lose customers.

    HelloGrowthCRM capability: Distribution, not averages

  • Problem: Enquiries sit unassigned because they arrived out of hours or into a shared inbox.

How HelloGrowthCRM solves it: Route every enquiry to an owner automatically the moment it arrives, whatever the channel or the hour. An unassigned item is one nobody is late on.

    HelloGrowthCRM capability: Automatic routing

  • Problem: TAT is measured only at the end, so breaches are discovered after the customer has noticed.

How HelloGrowthCRM solves it: Put the clock on the record and alert before the promise expires, not after. TAT improves when somebody is warned while there is still time.

    HelloGrowthCRM capability: Alerts before breach
