How construction work is won in India
Referrals first, portals second, patience always
An Indian contractor's best enquiries come from people: the architect who liked the finishing on the last bungalow, the builder who needs a reliable civil partner, the client whose brother-in-law is planning a house. Portals and listings add volume at the smaller end. Either way, the enquiry then enters a distinctly Indian rhythm: a site visit, a measurement, a BOQ, and several rounds of negotiation in which the family consults, the rate is revisited, and the start date waits for the right muhurat or the festival season. Deals here are not lost to competitors as often as they are lost to silence, the quote nobody followed up while the client's cousin introduced another contractor.
Cash flow is won at the quoting table
Stage payments, advances, RA bills, and retention are agreed at the start and collected across months. Firms that track milestones and remind clients systematically stay liquid; firms that chase from memory end up financing their clients' projects with their own working capital.
