How the travel business works in Thailand
Two markets under one roof
Many Thai travel companies straddle two very different trades. Inbound work serves overseas agents and direct international guests — quoted in dollars or euros, won on response speed and reliability, concentrated into the November-to-February high season. Outbound serves Thai travellers bound for Japan, Korea and Europe — sold in baht, driven by school holidays and Songkran, and negotiated in the chat apps Thai customers live in. Each trade has its own rhythm, and mixing their files in one list serves neither.
The agent relationship is the balance sheet
For inbound operators, a handful of overseas agencies can represent most of the year's volume. Those relationships run on years of accumulated detail — agreed rates, preferred hotels, how a complaint in 2024 was resolved — which too often lives in one employee's inbox. When that employee leaves, the company discovers what its real asset was.
