What each record actually represents
A lead is an unevaluated enquiry
A lead is contact without conclusion. Someone filled a form, messaged on WhatsApp, called the number in an advertisement or handed over a card at an exhibition. You know a person exists and roughly where they came from. You do not yet know whether they need what you sell, whether they can decide, or whether anything will happen this year.
An opportunity is a specific sale you are working
An opportunity has survived that evaluation. There is an identified requirement, a person who can influence the decision, and a plausible timeframe. Because of that it can carry a value and an expected close date, which is what makes it forecastable. It moves through stages, and each stage change is a statement about how likely it now is.
