How logistics is sold in South Africa
Two markets running side by side
There is transactional work, where a shipper wants a rate for a load this week, and contracted work, awarded through formal tenders that run for years. The same sales team usually handles both, and the two require completely different rhythms: one is answered in an hour, the other is prepared over months.
The corridor is the product
Durban to Gauteng, the Cape corridors and cross-border routes into Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique each carry their own cost, transit reality and documentation. A customer is not one price; they are a set of corridors with different competitiveness, and the CRM should reflect that.
Compliance paperwork decides who is even eligible
Large shippers, mines, retailers and public sector buyers will not award to a supplier whose vendor file is stale. Tax clearance, B-BBEE certification and insurance all expire, and an expired certificate disqualifies a bid that was otherwise the best on the table.
