How professional firms actually win work in South Africa
Referrals open the conversation, procurement decides the outcome
Consultancies, law firms, accounting practices, engineering firms and agencies grow through relationships and reputation, supported by LinkedIn and sector visibility. For corporate and public sector clients, though, the award runs through a procurement process with its own requirements: supplier onboarding forms, current compliance certificates and a proposal in the format the buyer asked for. The best relationship in the room does not survive an incomplete submission.
Paperwork has expiry dates
The certificates and clearances South African buyers routinely request are renewed annually, and they lapse quietly. Keeping them current is the supplier's obligation, and a firm that treats renewal as a diarised task rather than an administrative afterthought avoids the most avoidable disqualification there is.
Getting paid is part of the sale
Terms are commonly thirty days and frequently stretch further, particularly in the public sector. Firms that plan collection into the engagement, rather than reacting when cash flow tightens, keep the client relationship comfortable and the balance sheet healthier.
