What is different about logistics & trade in India
Freight forwarders and customs brokers must hold a valid Customs Broker Licence issued under CBIC's licensing regulations, and every exporter needs an Import Export Code (IEC) from the DGFT on file before a shipment can move. Enquiries usually come through trade association referrals, freight marketplaces and existing buyer-seller relationships rather than cold web traffic, so the pipeline should track the IEC and HS code per shipment lead, not just the customer name.
Export invoices are typically zero-rated or LUT-based under GST, which is a different invoicing flow from domestic freight billing and needs its own template. Shipment and buyer data shared with customs and freight partners should still be handled under DPDP Act 2023 principles when it includes personal contact details. Export enquiry volume often rises ahead of major buyer countries' holiday restocking seasons and dips around the Indian festival season when factories and ports run reduced staff.
Set up your CRM for India logistics & trade teams
- Add IEC number and HS code fields to every export lead so customs paperwork can be prepared without re-asking the buyer.
- Set up a GST LUT/zero-rated export invoice template separate from the domestic freight billing template.
- Flag the Indian festival season on the calendar as a reduced-capacity period when setting delivery-date expectations with buyers.
