Quick answer

What is telesales?

Telesales is the selling of products or services over the telephone. A telesales executive calls or receives calls from prospective customers, understands what they need, explains the offer, deals with objections and completes the sale on the call or agrees a definite next step. It differs from telemarketing, which uses calls to create interest, because in telesales the call itself is where the sale is made.
  • Telesales executive: the person who sells by phone and works to a sales target
  • A telesales call has seven steps: prepare, open, qualify, present, handle objections, close, record
  • In Hindi: टेलीसेल्स, meaning फोन पर बिक्री

01

Telesales meaning in simple words

Telesales is selling over the phone. The customer and the seller never meet. The whole sale, from the first hello to the order, happens in one or a few telephone conversations, often with a WhatsApp message or an email carrying the details in between.

It suits products that a customer can understand and decide on without a visit: insurance policies, online courses, loans and credit cards, broadband and mobile plans, software subscriptions, travel packages, health check-ups and home services. It is also how many businesses renew and upgrade existing customers, because a call is cheaper than a visit and more persuasive than a message.

02

Telesales executive: the role

A telesales executive is the person who makes those sales. The title appears in job adverts as telesales executive, telesales officer, tele sales representative or sales executive, voice process. Whatever the title, the role has three parts.

  • Convert enquiries. Call people who have shown interest, quickly, and turn that interest into an order or a booking.
  • Work a list. Call past customers, expiring renewals or a targeted list, and find the ones who are ready to buy.
  • Keep the record straight. Log each call, set each callback, and send each promised document, so that nothing depends on memory.

Executives usually carry a monthly target in sales or revenue and earn an incentive on top of fixed pay. Because incentive plans vary so widely, check current job listings for your city and industry for pay, not a published average.

The telesales process: seven steps of a sales call

Good telesales is structured without sounding scripted. These seven steps are the structure. The words in between are the executive's own.

StepAimIn practice
1. PrepareKnow who you are calling and whyRead the enquiry, the source and any earlier calls before dialling
2. OpenEarn the next thirty secondsName, company, reason for the call, and a request for a minute
3. QualifyFind out if and how you can helpNeed, timing, budget, and who else decides
4. PresentMatch the offer to what you heardTwo or three points that matter to this customer, not the whole brochure
5. Handle objectionsUnderstand before answeringAsk what they are comparing with, then respond to that
6. Close or agree the next stepAsk clearlyTake the order, send the link, or fix a callback with a time
7. Record and follow upMake the call countLog the outcome, send what was promised, keep the callback

Openers, qualification questions and objection responses for Indian customers are written out in telecalling scripts for India, and you can draft your own with the call script builder.

05

Inbound and outbound telesales

Inbound

The customer calls after seeing an advert, a website or a missed-call number. Interest already exists, so the work is to answer fast, understand the need and make buying easy. The commonest failure is a call that nobody answers, or a callback that comes a day late.

Outbound

The executive calls a lead, a past customer or a selected list. The opening matters more because the customer did not choose the moment, and the list matters more than the script. An average caller on a fresh, relevant list will outsell a talented caller on a stale one.

06

B2C and B2B telesales

Selling to consumers is fast and high in volume: many calls, short conversations, and a decision made by one person, often on the first or second call. Selling to businesses is slower. The person who answers is rarely the only decision maker, the call often ends with a quotation instead of an order, and the sale is won in the follow-up. In B2B work the quotation and its follow-up become part of the process, which is covered in following up B2B quotations.

07

Skills of a good telesales executive

Asking before telling

Two or three good questions at the start shorten the rest of the call, because the pitch can then be about this customer instead of every customer.

Saying the value briefly

On the phone there are no slides. The offer has to be explained in a few sentences the customer can repeat to someone else.

Staying steady on price

Ask what the customer is comparing with before answering. Half the time the comparison is not like for like.

Asking for the order

Many calls go well and end without a sale because nobody asked. Shall I book it for you now is a fair question after a good conversation.

Following up without being asked

Most phone sales close on a later call. The executive who calls back at the promised time wins work that others had written off.

08

How telesales performance is measured

MeasureWhat it shows
Sales or revenue closedThe result the role exists for, measured per executive and per week
Conversion rateSales divided by leads handled. It shows the quality of conversations, not just effort
Time to first callHow quickly a new enquiry is called. Usually the easiest number to improve
Conversations per dayCalls where a real exchange took place, as opposed to dials
Follow-ups completed on timePromised callbacks that were actually made
Average order valueWhether executives sell the right plan or only the cheapest one
Call quality scoreA team leader's rating of sampled recordings for accuracy and courtesy

The number of calls dialled is deliberately absent. It is easy to inflate and tends to move in the opposite direction to call quality. It is useful only beside the others.

10

Rules to respect

Sales calls in India fall under the rules for commercial communication. Customers can register a preference against promotional calls, and a request to stop has to be honoured. Call people who enquired, say who you are at the start, tell the customer if the call is recorded, keep to reasonable daytime hours, and never promise what the product does not do. See NDNC and telecalling rules in India.

11

Tools that telesales runs on

A telesales team needs three things on one screen: the list of leads, a way to call them, and the record of what happened. When those live in a spreadsheet, a mobile phone and a notebook, callbacks are missed and nobody can say which lead source produces sales. HelloGrowthCRM puts them together as a telecalling CRM with a built-in CRM dialer and WhatsApp follow-up. If you are hiring, the telecaller job description has a template. Paid plans start at ₹899 per user per month and there is a free plan. See India pricing.

Challenges we solve

Why telesales teams miss targets, and what fixes it

Four problems that have little to do with talent and a lot to do with how the work is organised.

  • New enquiries are called the next day, by which time the customer has already spoken to two competitors.

Route every new enquiry to a named executive at once and measure the time to first call. Speed is the cheapest advantage a telesales team has.Fast first call

  • Executives are judged on the number of calls, so they make many short calls and few real conversations.

Track conversations, next steps booked and sales alongside dials. What gets measured is what gets done.Balanced targets

  • The customer agrees on the call, and the order is lost in the two days it takes to send the quotation or payment link.

Send the quotation or the link while still on the call or immediately after it, from the same screen, and set the follow-up before moving on.Close on the call

  • Every executive handles the price objection differently, and discounts are given away on the first request.

Agree one response to each common objection, practise it aloud, and set a discount limit that needs approval beyond a point.Shared objection bank

What you get

Why teams choose HelloGrowthCRM

AI-powered CRM with the features you need to close more deals.

  • Leads from forms, adverts, WhatsApp and marketplaces arrive in one list, so a telesales executive calls within minutes instead of the next morning
  • AI lead scoring ranks the list, so the first calls of the day go to the people most likely to buy
  • A built-in dialer calls from the lead record and logs the call automatically, with recording where consent applies
  • The customer's history, earlier calls and the script are on the screen during the call
  • Outcomes are picked from a fixed list after each call, which makes the team's numbers comparable
  • A callback agreed on the call becomes a reminder at that time, so promised calls are actually made
  • Quotations and payment links can be sent on WhatsApp during or straight after the call, while the customer is still interested
  • The deal moves through pipeline stages, so a manager can see what is likely to close this week
  • Team leaders see calls, connects, talk time, outcomes and sales for each executive, without waiting for an end of day report
  • Unanswered calls can trigger a message and a callback task, so a lead is not dropped after one attempt
