CRM full form and meaning
CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management. Read the three words backwards and the meaning is plain: it is the management of relationships with customers. A business that practises CRM keeps a record of every customer and every prospect, remembers what was said to them, and follows up when it said it would.
The term is used in two ways. It is a way of working, in which the customer's history belongs to the company and not to one employee's phone. And it is a kind of software that makes that way of working possible once there are too many customers to hold in your head. When someone says we need a CRM, they mean the software. When a job advert asks for CRM experience, it may mean either.
The phrase became common in the 1990s, when simple contact management programs grew into systems that also tracked sales and service. If you want the longer explanation of how the software works and who needs it, read our plain-English guide, what is CRM.
