How apparel is actually sold in India
The catalogue goes out on WhatsApp, and so does everything else
For most Indian apparel brands the season begins with images. A new range is photographed, a catalogue is assembled, and it goes out on WhatsApp to retailers, distributors and agents. Buyers respond with a voice note or a list of styles. Nothing about that is wrong, and it is far faster than any portal. The problem is that it happens on personal phones, so the brand cannot say which retailers saw the range, which replied, and which were never followed up.
Agents carry the market and the order book
In most categories the real selling is done by agents and distributors who know their market. That works well commercially and badly informationally: the brand learns the true order position late, after the bookings are collected and reconciled. In a festive window measured in weeks, learning late is the same as not learning at all.
