How retail actually sells in Nigeria
The shop window is Instagram and the counter is WhatsApp
Demand starts with a post, a comment asking the price, and a move into direct messages. From there the conversation shifts to WhatsApp, where photographs, sizes, prices and a delivery address are exchanged. A physical shop, where one exists, often serves as reassurance rather than as the point of first contact. Any system that models retail as footfall alone captures the smallest part of the business.
The sale is not complete until the money is confirmed
Bank transfer is the normal payment method and a screenshot is the normal evidence. Screenshots can be edited, delayed or simply wrong. Dispatching before funds are confirmed is the single most common way a growing retailer loses stock, and it happens most on the busiest days when staff are trying to be helpful.
Delivery is the second business you are running
Riders, dispatch companies and inter-state logistics decide whether an order becomes revenue. Lagos traffic, incorrect addresses and customers who stop answering all produce failed deliveries, and a failed delivery costs the trip, the packaging and often the sale.
