Pick Xero if you run a service business, agency, consultancy or trade with a handful of staff and no serious stock. It is quicker to learn, the app marketplace is far deeper, and almost every Australian and New Zealand bookkeeper can support it from day one. Pick MYOB if you hold inventory, run job costing, or pay more than about thirty people. AccountRight bundles inventory, job costing and unlimited payroll at a price that beats Xero once you add the equivalent add-ons. Sole traders should look at MYOB Solo first. At roughly A$99 a year it is hard to argue with, provided you never need a second user. In New Zealand the balance tips towards Xero. It is a New Zealand company, the local plan set is simpler, and accountant support is close to universal. One point applies to both. Neither product tracks a sales pipeline, chases a lead, or logs a phone call. They record money that has already been agreed. The work of winning that money sits somewhere else, usually a spreadsheet, and that is the gap worth closing next.
Xero wins on usability, integrations and everyday reconciliation. MYOB wins on inventory, job costing and payroll at scale, and its entry plan is much cheaper. Neither is a bad choice for an Australian small business, and both handle BAS and Single Touch Payroll properly. Choose on the shape of your business. Light stock and lots of apps points to Xero. Warehouse and job costing points to MYOB. Neither one helps you sell.
If neither Xero nor MYOB fully fits
HelloGrowthCRM is not an accounting system. It will not do your BAS, run payroll or replace Xero or MYOB, and you should keep whichever one you picked. It covers the part before the invoice: leads, follow-up, quotes nobody chased and calls nobody logged. Two-way WhatsApp, a built-in auto-dialler with call recording, AI lead scoring, email sequences, pipeline management and invoicing, at $12 per user per month or $10 billed annually. There is a free forever plan, and invoices raised here can be reconciled in your books.
