The billing counter is not a sales system
Most supermarket growth happens away from the till
A supermarket's counter business runs itself, and the POS records it faithfully. The business that decides whether this year beats last year never touches the till: the office pantry that wants a monthly supply account, the hostel warden comparing three stores on rice and pulses, the caterer who needs four hundred kilos on Thursday, the corporate buyer collecting Diwali hamper quotes, and the households ordering on WhatsApp for home delivery.
The enquiry that arrives on a bill slip
None of that is a transaction problem. It is a follow-up problem. Ask any grocery owner how institutional enquiries reach them and the honest answer is a phone number written on the back of a printed bill. There is no record, no owner and no reminder. The enquiry gets handled that evening because someone happened to remember, or it does not get handled at all — and nobody ever learns which recurring order was lost, because a lost enquiry leaves no trace.
